About this site

isitlegal.com.au answers Australia's everyday legality questions, state by state, from the legislation itself. It exists because the answers are scattered across eight jurisdictions' legislation registers, and most of what ranks in search is stale, single-state, or uncited.

Who checks the content

This site is written and edited by Shawn B, our legal editor.

Shawn was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland in 2015 and spent years in practice in Australia before moving overseas, where he practises law today. He does not hold an Australian practising certificate and does not practise in Australia.

In practice that means working from the legislation itself rather than from someone else's summary of it, and taking the time to trace which provision actually creates a rule before writing about it.

So every claim here is tied to the legislation it comes from, quoted with a pinpoint citation, and stamped with the date it was last checked against the official register. You never have to take our word for it. The sources are right there on the page.

How it's funded

The site is independent. It carries no advertising today, and we expect to pay for it with clearly-marked display advertising. Those ads get chosen by an advertising network, not by us, so we can't promise you won't see an ad from a business we happen to write about. What we can promise is that no advertiser has any say in what a page here concludes, and nobody pays us to cover a topic or to reach a particular answer.
